I’ve chosen today to talk about sea turtles, because today happens to be World Sea Turtle Day. Did you know that over 50% of the world’s sea turtle population has already consumed plastic waste? According to Ocean Conservancy, a plastic item as tiny as one single die used for board games contains enough plastic to kill 1 in 2 baby sea turtles. Think about that for a moment, and then I urge you to look around your home and consider how many day-to-day items contain plastic. We use plastic items every single day without considering the effects these items will have on sea life once they inevitably end up in the ocean. We need to put a stop to the global plastic issue that we are facing, and it starts with you and me. The Research for Environmental Uses and Sustainable Economies Act (REUSE Act) is a Bipartisan bill that would direct the Environmental Protection Agency to conduct studies to determine how best to decrease plastic production and expand reuse systems so that we rely less on single use plastic items. Today, in honor of World Sea Turtle Day, please consider clicking the link below to urge your representatives to support the REUSE Act! Together we can build a brighter future for our sea turtles.
