Last month, the ASPCA launched a digital resource for helping shoppers easily locate humanely raised food products at local grocery stores in their area. This resource is incredibly easy to use. Shoppers simply select their desired product from the meat and dairy categories (listed alphabetically for a quick and easy selection!) Shoppers then enter their zip code and are immediately provided with the exact stores and locations, as well as the product details for humanely raised items within the category they selected. This tool also shares tips on local farmer’s markets, online companies, and the types of humanely raised products that can be found at these markets and through these online grocers as well. My goal is that The Gentle Earth Journal continues to be a place for gentle, uplifting, and positive encouragement, and therefore I will spare many details on the topic of factory farming in America. However, I strongly encourage you to research the reality of factory farming and the source of your meat and dairy products. 10 billion…you read that right…10 BILLION animals in the U.S. are rasied for food annually, and of those 10 billion, over 97% are raised in factory farms. Financially, you have the power to determine which type of companies you are supporting. The ASPCA’s ShopKind act gives you the resources to do so. I also strongly believe that in order to truly support humanely raised products and discontinue our support of inhumanely raised food, we need to know the truth.
