We probably all know at least one person who has said something along the lines of “most plastic isn’t actually recyclable, so what’s the point in recycling at all?” The sad truth is, they aren’t far off in stating that most plastic in the U.S. does not actually end up recycled. Confusing, misleading labels lead to large amounts of plastic waste. This is a major problem. Improper labeling has caused a storm of confusion and has made it harder for those who want to protect the ocean from being able to properly do their part.
The Truth in Labeling Act has been introduced with intent to ensure more clearly defined labeling for items that are labeled “recyclable”, “reusable”, and “compostable”. This Act would also ensure that producers adhere to the same labeling standards – making sorting easier for all.
This bill, if passed, could make a huge difference in minimizing the amount of plastic waste that ends up in our ocean. We have the chance now to encourage our representatives to consider these facts when deciding the outcome of this bill. I urge you to take just a few minutes out of your day to send a quick message to your representatives at the link below.
