Currently, the Rio Grande is facing a severe crisis. It has experienced decreased supply due to an increase in the demand for freshwater, as well as a lengthy drought. Humans are using the water faster than it can be replenished, with 52% of all water used being considered unsustainable.

Additionally, you can take action today by urging congress as they consider two important policies: The Water Resources Development Act (WRDA) and WaterSMART appropriations.
The WRDA, which congress passes every 2 years, is currently being reviewed for 2026 with updates that focus on modernizing the RGEMP (Rio Grande Environmental Management Program). The RGEMP provides support for projects that prioritize improving wildlife habitat, drought resilience, and maintaining a healthy watershed.
WaterSMART investment would provide impacted communities with the ability to restore wildlife habitat, make necessary upgrades to infrastructure, and better prepare for escalating drought.
